Growing up, I told people I wanted to be a doctor, a football player or the next Steve Irwin. My path became clear after my freshman year in college. While recovering from an injury that required surgery, I received devastating news. My father, a first responder on 9/11, was diagnosed with cancer related to working at the World Trade Center site. Though he passed away the following year, the care he received motivated me to focus on medicine. Today, I am a physician and researcher at UM working in sports medicine, student health and Sylvester’s Firefighter Cancer Initiative. Though life has presented challenges, I truly feel I am now doing what I was meant to do.”
