Walter Lambert, M.D. ’85, has spent four decades on the front lines of child protection, advocating for one of society’s most vulnerable populations. With a career defined by service, he has helped thousands of children and families — combining medical expertise with deep compassion — and reshaped how child abuse and neglect are identified, addressed and prevented across Florida.

Guided by a Franciscan-rooted Catholic faith, Dr. Lambert felt a personal calling to serve. He began as a social worker and then earned his medical degree.

“The Miller School’s commitment to public service gave me the foundation to make a real difference,” said Dr. Lambert, who is an associate professor of clinical pediatrics.

After graduating, he found his purpose in pediatrics — a field, he says, that combines healing and justice. Since 1989, Dr. Lambert has led UM’s Child Protection Team (CPT) at UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital, expanding its services across Miami-Dade and Monroe counties and into Southwest Florida.

Under his leadership, the CPT evaluates more than 2,000 suspected abuse cases annually, working closely with law enforcement and the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). His team conducts detailed forensic assessments, which include interviewing children, examining injuries and recommending interventions.

“Forensically, we determine whether abuse occurred,” Dr. Lambert said. “But our focus is always child safety. Every case is about protecting a child and supporting a family.”

A national authority on physical, emotional and sexual abuse, Dr. Lambert is also a beloved teacher. Known for his informal, empathetic teaching style, he has trained generations of medical students, social workers and law enforcement officers in the United States and abroad.

He challenges them to lead with cultural sensitivity and deep listening. “A ‘normal’ exam doesn’t invalidate a child’s truth,” he tells his trainees. “The most powerful thing we can do is believe and listen … truly listen.”

The son of a pediatrician and the father of six children, Dr. Lambert has carried the emotional weight of his work with humility and resilience, drawing strength from faith, family and purpose. His lifetime of service has earned him top honors, including UM’s Iron Arrow Honor Society distinction in 2010 and Florida DCF’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.

Now approaching retirement, he reflects on a career defined by healing. “Every day is different,” he said. “And every day, I know I’ve helped.”

Though he may be stepping back, Dr. Lambert’s impact — as a healer, teacher and protector — will continue to shape the lives of children and the professionals who serve them.

“Our focus is always child safety. Every case is about protecting a child and supporting a family.”
