Transforming the Future Honors our Great Legacy

Dear Friends of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine,
In this edition of University of Miami Medicine magazine, you will uncover a unifying principle: Collaboration and connection illuminate the path to better medicine. Throughout these pages, stories of ingenuity, innovation, donor generosity and team science showcase what is possible when brilliant minds unite with a shared purpose. Thanks to the dedication of our Med ’Canes community, we continue to push the boundaries of discovery — together.
One group of scientists is using electrical currents to stimulate the brain, spinal cord or nerves to help patients regain mobility. Another team is looking for the right combination of molecules to regenerate optic nerves, moving one step closer to a whole-eye transplant. Others are finding new ways to quickly curb the spread of an infectious disease, helping cancer survivors return to a rich, full life, and developing methods for delaying — and possibly preventing — dementia before it begins. These are just a few examples of the incredible investigations taking place here every day. Many of our physician-scientists, and those donors whose generosity supports them, are Miller School alumni.
Our students continue to thrive, making an impact that reaches far beyond our campus. In Voices, six M.D. students and graduate students share their groundbreaking work, from investigating an untreatable genetic disorder to developing novel drug therapies for Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, I am proud to share that the class of 2025 earned a 97% match rate, securing placements at top residency programs nationwide. These students — our future physicians and scientists — will carry forward our legacy of excellence.
Amidst a rapidly evolving landscape, our mission remains steadfast. We are training future physicians to become transformative leaders. We are pushing the boundaries of discovery to improve lives. And we are leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance diagnostics and uncover critical insights.
This year, as we celebrate the University of Miami’s 100th anniversary, I am more confident than ever about our exceptionally bright future. Excellence is our guiding principle, and collaboration is our driving force.
Our legacy is defined by building the future — and The Future Is U.
