“I started The Shop Docs in 2016 in partnership with the Miller School’s chapter of the Student National Medical Association, which supports minority medical students. On the first Saturday of every month, our student volunteers spend the day in a barber shop in Miami giving men blood pressure tests, educating them about heart disease, and providing tips on nutrition and exercise. It’s cool to have these conversations in a comfortable space where the men can build trusting relationships with medical professionals who look like them. And as students, we get a unique perspective on counseling people in the communities where they live.”
