For Monica Alba-Sandoval, M.D., program director of the Pediatrics Residency Training Program, Miami’s rich cultural diversity creates a unique environment for medical education and patient care.
“I think what makes the training here different is where we are located,” Alba-Sandoval said. “Miami is a really rich cultural city, and the needs of the community and the challenges patients present to us drive us to be excellent in research and academics.”
The region’s diverse patient population exposes residents to a wide range of medical conditions, social determinants of health and cultural perspectives, helping prepare them for careers in pediatric medicine.
Alba-Sandoval also credits the collaboration between Jackson Health System and Holtz Children’s Hospital as a cornerstone of the training experience. As a quaternary care center, the program serves patients with highly complex medical needs, including those who may not otherwise have access to specialized care.
This environment gives medical students and residents direct access to expert physicians, multidisciplinary care teams and advanced treatments. Just as importantly, they learn from faculty members who are committed to excellence in patient care, research and education.
For Alba-Sandoval, that combination of academic rigor, clinical expertise and compassionate care helps prepare the next generation of pediatricians to meet the evolving needs of children and families both in South Florida and beyond.
